Throughout the 1700–1800s, the fur trade was BIG business transporting resources from the upper Great Lakes to Montreal and eventually to the insatiable fashion market in Europe by way of large canoes. Our fiberglass and wood Montreal-style "big" canoe is based upon an Ojibwe canoe and measures 34' and can accommodate up to 20 guests. Although the voyageurs often paddled 30 or more miles a day (which is about 55 strokes per minute for 14 hours) our 2-hour tour will give you a bite-sized taste of history exploring a small corner of the Les Cheneaux Islands.
Trip is suitable for all ages, but due to the challenges of paddling a 600-pound canoe, we require a minimum of 6 adult guests total for trips to run. Participants may be from different reservations.
